title: Symmetry, emergence and gravity
abstract:
The notion of emergence-fundamental theories giving rise to effective ones at lower resolution scales- is central to physics. A crucial ingredient to emergence in physics are symmetries,, or more precisely, the spontaneous breakdown of them. In this talk I will discuss the interplay between effective theories and symmetry breaking, with a focus on gravitational physics. I will talk about how the internal symmetries of matter and the geometric symmetries of spacetime combine to give rise to condensed matter and gravitational systems, and how these tools are used to study phenomenology for which the fundamental theory remains unknown, such as cosmic inflation or dark energy.
